You know what? – I haven’t dove into market research & discovery in any of my posts. I don’t want anyone to think that it’s not important because it is – for both “newbies”and veterans alike.
So, in this post I’m not only going to show you how to discover your niche, I’m also going to help you narrow it down. Narrowing your niche is often over looked and there are many, many benefits for doing this..
Niche Mastery – “Fine Tuning” Your Sub-Niche
I made a PDF Document that you can download by clicking here to show you how I literally broke down the online home business arena into over 20 sub-niches that you can focus on and dominate.
But how..?? That’s the question most would be asking right now. (..I’ll get to how in a minute – it’s pretty simple really..)
First, I want to run through some things you’ll find inside the document.
There’s a quote by Bill Clinton that says: “In Today’s Knowledge-Based Economy, What You Earn Depends On What You Learn” and I agree with this statement 100%..
BUT there’s more to this equation when it comes to the home business industry, which is that our success will be determined in our ability TO TRANSFER THAT KNOWLEDGE onto others …and this brings me to becoming the expert.
What’s the point of learning all this stuff if you don’t or can’t showcase your skills to the world? The internet allows us to do this cost efficiently and effectively with online video, blogging, social networks, and many other ways.
My Top 3 Tips To Dominating & Becoming The Expert
So here’s your Top Three Tips to dominating and becoming the expert in your niche (..whatever niche you choose..)
- Tip #1. Educate yourself - Learning is always the first step to becoming an expert (..and when I say expert – don’t think you need to become Dr.Phil). Achieving “expert-status” has little to do with how MANY people you get in front of and more to do with how those you DO get in front of view you.
For example -A spammer with a list of 1 million email addresses can literally get in front of hundreds of thousands of people – but what good does that do when no one knows who he is, or cares what he thinks?
- Tip #2. Narrow It Down – Ask yourself: “what do I like to talk about, what can I talk about all day long?” – & when you get an answer, break that topic up into smaller pieces and choose a sub-niche to focus.
- Tip #3. Master It - I’m sure the advanced marketers will agree that it feels great to speak from experience. The words just flow on “paper” ( ..or the computer screen, if you wanna get technical..) There’s little to no-thinking involved when you want to share value with people because you’ve already mastered the topic and have you’re own perspective.
Mastering does NOT mean going through an entire marketing course – Mastering is taking consistent action and getting results. If and when you do that, and share that value, you’ll become viewed as an expert and people will be asking you for help, advice, mentoring, coaching.. – the works!!
I know this was a long post, but I really hope you read every word & got a lot out of it. If you did, please – as always - share it, retweet it, digg, it, and stumble it - I’d really appreciate it.

Hey Hector,
This is a great post! You must study the business. That is great by breaking down your target audience. You see most folks just go for network markerters. Just like you mention you can break that down to even smaller group to really laser focus.
That is so true experience comes with doing and failing. I’ve made mistake in the 8 months of blogging. However because of those mistakes I’ve been able to accomplish some pretty cool stuff. You can’t be afraid of making mistakes. This is what builds the character inside someone.

Thanks for this simple but clear guide to specializing in your field, Hector! I always liked Tim Ferris’s idea that to really become an expert, you should read the top three books in your field and write a one page summary of each – it really gives you the ability to understand the basic points and also get an idea of areas you can improve. Thanks!
Wow Nacie,
I read the 4-Hour Work Week, and completely forgot about that tip. It definitely fits into #1 in the list. Educating yourself.
Thanks for adding value to the conversation

Hey Hector,
Thanks for the free download. That’s cool.
I am a firm believer in mastering. One thing I have noticed which is one skill that is universal and very effective is communication.
Written or spoken. If there was one skill I would recommend to master it would be a “people person”. It will get you results you never imagined was even possible.
It’s changed everything for me…Thought I’d pass that along.

Hi Hector,
I think the most important point to take from your post is “Mastering is taking consistent action and getting results.” The biggest problem is people move from strategy to strategy before they get results. The problem is not the strategy but having the mindset to stay put in one place for long enough.

Exactly right – Patience is a virtue, especially in business. We need to accept that few things work right the first time (unless you’re extremely lucky)..
..and the key to succeeding in anything, is to continue to try UNTIL you get it!

I can’t see anyone going against the fact that education and action will determine Your success. I mean just keyword research alone is a skill and without it, You’re just guessing. I won’t even get into tracking and proper marketing practices. ( Education)!

Hi Hector, you made a point again.
Everything you wrote can be applied on life itself – we can hear and try to learn many things from books, from parents, but we can never really know how things work unless we live through it and surely hit the wall with our head sometimes. But those are the most valuable lessons and the same thing goes for online business. It takes time to master the strategy, but once we do – that knowledge is priceless.
Milena,
I like that last line “It takes time to master the strategy, but once we do – that knowledge is priceless”
Yes. you’re totally right – once you hit the wall, felt the pain, and got back up – the lessons you learned from that experience are worth much more than the effort you put in.
Thanks for applying this to life
Have a great weekend,
Hector
Hector,
Being a specialist in one area of your niche or an “expert” is truly the way we brand ourselves as someone to turn to. Take the time to learn it, share what you learned and offer to help others and before you know it you have people searching you out!

Hector–
You are right on target. Identifying your niche right from the beginning saves internet marketers a huge amount of time at the beginning and helps them to realize profits much sooner. By already identifying what and to whom you are selling, your efforts in the beginning are guaranteed to be working towards that one audience and it far more difficult to go down the wrong path.
Great Advice!

Hector this makes a a lot of sense and I must tell you one thing one of uplines in a previous business decided to send out 1 million emails to a list that a friend had access to.Nothing happend, it was just a waste of his time & money and I even told him that it would not work and would proberbly get him into a ton of trouble. The funny thing is some people look for a short cut to success and not willing to work for it and then it comes back and bites one in the behind. It is a classis case of I told you so!!Guess he missed Point 1 completely!!

Hi Hector
I came into online marketing in February last year at age 67 and had to put my head down and get an education – again! We all have to be prepared to be life-long learners. Since then I’ve gradually worked my way through your second two points and I’m now ready to focus on sharing (as soon as my Blog is up!). You have captured the process beautifully.
I also love the way you have taken the time, and put in the thought, to respond to each post. That shows me that you genuinely want to communicate with people. I’m impressed
Kisane
Kisane,
Thanks for stopping by.. Becoming life-long learners is a must when getting into business. Our business & marketing knowledge will determine how far we can take our business.
The last thing we want is to be limited by what we know when the knowledge is out there somewhere. I try to connect personally to each and every reader, just like I’m doing right now – it takes a while, but time WELL SPENT ;0)
Take care.. hope you come back
Hector
Hector – you are speaking to me with this article. In fact, helping solo entrepreneurs find and attract their ideal niche is my niche!
Finding your niche is one of the most important things you can do to set a solid foundation for your business. It is what allows you to be strategic and focused with all of your marketing.
I wrote a free report, “Ten Steps to Finding and Attracting Your Ideal Niche” and encourage anyone who is stuck to pick up a copy.
Thanks and warm wishes,

Great stuff!! Alot of times my mentoring students and others who ask me don’t understand what their niche should be and when they think they get it, they want it to be “internet marketing”. Then I have to explain to them the importance of narrowing it down and keeping it within their passion and then just intermixing the internet marketing with their passion.
Personal branding continues to amaze me though with it’s potential. Fantastic!

Amanda,
That’s all I see now-a-days, and to be honest, it’s probably the hardest niche to get into if you don’t what you’re doing. But that’s great advice – integrate your passion with internet marketing.. but still making sure they mix well, because I’ll find it really hard trying to sell people on internet marketing when I’ve been talking about cooking recipes or something wat out there..
