Copywriting is a weird topic for me. I’ve studied it before, read some books, did some research… but ultimately I always end up writing like I talk.
Still, I know it’s an important topic, especially when it comes to grabbing your readers attention… which brings be to A.I.D.A. I know the advanced readers know what I’m talking about, but for the “newbies”…
What The Heck Is A.I.D.A?
Let’s keep this short and simple (I don’t wanna bore anyone)
A is for Attention – You need to grab your readers attention first.
I is for Interest - Then you spark their interest to keep their attention.
D is for Desire - After interest is sparked, Desire for your product or service needs to be created.
A is for Action – Then the person takes Action on whatever it is you’re offering.
Now that we got that out of the way, how do we grab people’s attention to bring them into our blog?
Here Are My Top 3 Headline Writing Tips
Tip#1 – Create Curiosity – The key to creating curiosity is to just have fun with it. You can use movie phrases and substitute some words or play with some cliche phrases.
An exmaple would be “To Blog Or Not To Blog, That Is The Question” – This might sound cheesy but I can almost gurantee that it will outperform against a headline that reads – “Reasons Why You Should Blog”. Agreed? Great!
Tip#2 – Include a Benefit – This is a great strategy for writing effective headlines because everyone is cruising the web tuned into the W.I.I.F.M (what’s in it for me) radio station. So your headline needs to tell them What’s In It For Them.
I could’ve easily titled this post “How To Write Effective Headlines”, but that headline holds no benefit to my readers.
Tip#3 – Promise a Solution – Everyone is always searching for the answer to their problems, so promising a solution will definitely get your readers attention.
For example: In yesterday’s post, I knew a pressing problem (objective/excuse) that most people have is that they can’t build a business because they’re on a budget. So I promised to solve that problem by titling my post “You CAN Build A Business With A $29.95 Budget!”
Do You Have Any Tips You’d Like To Share?
Remember that writing a great headline is one thing, and delivering on your promises is another. I hope I delivered on my promises, but we won’t know until you actually take these tips and apply them to your blog.
If you enjoyed this post – share it, retweet it, digg it, stumble it.. pass it on.
This is Hector.. signing off – Talk soon.
Hey Hector,
Do you know even the veteran writers need to hear this. If someone thinks that they know it all. Guess what happens…there is always someone right around the corner ready to pass them.
That is why I appreciate information like this because it keeps me in checked. Thanks for writing this!
Have a wonderful weekend…

Josh (The Ninja),
You’re right.. there’s always someone better & when thinking about headlines, we need to think real long and hard to beat everyone around us.
It’s the first thing people see, so it NEEDS to be good.
Thanks bro
You too,
Hector
P.S. I took a gamble on this post man.. if this headline doesn’t pull people in – I’m toast
Thanks for sharing this information, I am going to share this with my list as i find great value in it. Have an Awesome Day!

I guess I’m a “newb” to all of this, honestly I was looking for more information on what exactly ‘online marketing’ entailed. After a couple of google searches I ran across a couple of blogs/sites where your name came up. From reading around, seems like you have very well rounded knowledge on the subject.
Now this post, I’ve heard of similar terms but truthfully speaking, all of the ornate terms just left too much room for interpretation. A.I.D.A is simple and straight to the point.
Good stuff man. Thanks
Oh, and I’m not sure if that was the intention but the word “eyeball” definitely reeled me in.
Aixel,
First off, thanks for stopping by and welcome..
If you’re new to all this, there are a lot of articles and videos on this blog that will definitely help you out.
I’m glad you ended up on my site – that’s the power of social media marketing..
..and yes, A.I.D.A is a simple concept but also very powerful in sales..
thanks for commenting
have a great weekend,
Hector
Hmm… So if my next blog post was entitled just “Eyeballs”, I wonder if people would click over just out of curiosity.

Try it Seth.. you never know
Then you can write a post teaching people how to write one word headlines
that should be fun..
These are good and very useful tips.
I usually include numbers in headlines to generate curiosity and show what’s in for readers. This works very well for list posts. For example, 101.5 Useful Tools And Resources For Bloggers was a headline for my biggest list.
I just retweeted this post!

Hi Hector
Curiosity can be very useful and powerful tool. It is a very good way to catch readers. I knew most of thing you listed but repetitions is always good. Very often the same things are explained in different ways and sometimes people can discover something new.

Hey Hector, you did it again… every time I think of something you come up with a great solution… (law of attraction).
Just yesterday I was viewing all my posts (all… meaning 6) and some pulled 5-6 times as many clicks to my posts. As I compared my headlines, I said “man I gotta come up some better headlines”.
I kind of feel somewhat responsible for this post (ha).

All of these things are down at a subconscious level. Readers don’t necessarily realize a certain word catches their eye or that they are clicking because they see the potential of getting something for free.
.-= Seth Miller´s last undefined ..Response cached until Fri 14 @ 17:39 GMT (Refreshes in 46 Minutes) =-.
Seth,
YES.. YES.. YES!! That’s exactly what copywriting is all about. It’s all about psychological triggers and emotion building phrases that ‘get’ people to do, basically, ‘do what you ask’ but because THEY want to.
Weird stuff.. thanks for sharing your thoughts
Have a great weekend

Hey Hector my man! I loved this! That can be a challenge at times when you’re writing a post and thinking “what title can I give this so anyone even with ADD would stop and look.” That’s not me being insensitive, it’s just the way the world runs now. We are always in such a hurry we never stop for anything but if something looks funny or interesting we’ll stop and take a look. Thanks for sharing buddy!

Thanks for sharing your straightforward strategies for making copywriting less intimidating. It’s funny how we are all EXPOSED to it every day and yet, doing it yourself can, at first, seem overwhelming. Like anything else, understanding the simple basics and then practicing them, is the key to building confidence and success.

Very good post, Hector. This is my first time on your website and I am already impressed.
Here is my 2 cents to add to your article:
As you know, reaching your customers in an deep and emotional way is a key to successful copywriting, and your headline is unquestionably the most important piece of copy you use to reach prospects.
