How Having The Power To Decide Kept Me In The Game

power to decideThis is a strange post for me to write. I honestly don’t know where it’s coming from but I just felt like getting a bit more personal with you all. (..I just hope it doesn’t weird anybody out)

If you’ve watched my intro video (To The Right) which most of you have, you know I started getting visitors to this blog on April 10th, 2010. It was literally the most exciting day of my life.

Who Gets Excited Because Of 6 Visitors? Me, apparently..

I don’t know who those 6 visitors were, but I just wanna thank them right now for giving me that feeling of “I can actually do this”

Before that day I had countless failures, miserable results trying stuff out, and very little motivation to keep going. The story goes like this, please keep in mind I never share this with anyone before…

  1. Got introduced to online marketing
  2. Tried an automated system & it didn’t work for me
  3. Bought a marketing product
  4. Became an affiliate and made a couple sales
  5. Was happy for a couple weeks and didn’t make another dime for months
  6. …got really really SAD and overwhelmed :0(

I really felt like giving up. There was a voice inside my head telling me to call it quits. Then I reached what I consider to be the turning point of my life. The day that I made a DECISION.

Wow.. what a powerful concept, isn’t it? -

Having the POWER TO DECIDE.

That day I decided to stop whining about the things that weren’t working and start seeing these “failures” as lessons learned. That was the day I became Hector The Online Marketer.

You see… marketers are a rare breed:

  • MARKETERS don’t care whether or not a capture page converts – they tweak it until it does
  • MARKETERS don’t feel a thing when they get a refund – because it’s just how it works
  • MARKETERS see criticism and negative comments as market research
  • MARKETERS translate failures and errors into Valuable Experience they can share with others

So what’s the moral of this story?? Simple – Make A Decision Today, (…RIGHT NOW EVEN) - To Become A Marketer and I can almost guarantee that you’ll laugh at the thought of giving up.

Making a decision to become student of marketing and keep moving forward has allowed me to turn those 6 visitors into hundreds of daily visitors – and you can do it too.

You really don’t have to share this post since it’s not really content based like my other ones, but I’d still appreciate it if you did.

    Great post Hector,

Yes, at times I do feel like giving up but I simply “refuse” to. The vision that I have for my life is so clear and I will never give up until I make my vision my reality.

    Hey Hector,

I think everyone who started online marketing at one point thought of giving up. I know at the beginning of Oct. ’09, I was overwhelm with the information I had to learn regarding How to create a blog, driving traffic to the blog, SEO, and how to maintain readers. After 2 months, I was only receiving maybe 2-3 visitors a day. It was discouraging since I was putting a good amount of time into it.

I just keep learning from courses and reading books. Thank God, that I didn’t quit. Today, great things are coming from it. Never ever quit!

    Hi Hector,

I luv it! This reminds me of the Think and Grow Rich chapter on Decision.

Yes, I’ve thought about quitting many times. Months on end of writing ebooks and blog posts with no traffic, financial headaches and the continual reminding from people that it might be time to get a J-O-B.

I’m glad that I made a decision a long time ago to ignore these negative influences.

I’ll be happy to RT this to my 12K twitter followers Hector, it’s inspirational!

    Hola Hector,

Thanks for being so open to sharing your feelings.. most don’t have the guts to open up and tell it how it is sometimes.

I think you hit on a great point with the “DECISION” line. I think that is a HUUUGE statement to make. If people just DECIDE on what they want to do; be it online marketing, network marketing, or affiliate marketing they will be a lot better off.

For example: If you have a bad day at your day job, do you quit? NO. Because you simply had a bad day and more than likely you’re gonna show up the next day because you have bills to pay.

People need to have that same attitude with their business or their marketing. You had a “bad day”. Whatever.. so what. BUT SHOW UP THE NEXT DAY WITHOUT FAIL. Most people quit because they can. It’s just a side project to them. It’s not paying the bills … yet.

I’ve learned to treat it “like” a day job and just show up everyday and like you said “start seeing these “failures” as lessons learned” and the success will come.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Hector!
It’s ok to feel that way. Tell me about it, I have had times where I would say, is this really worth it? all the negative comments from your friends and family, the doubts you get in your head sometimes, and everything else that goes around your world. What has kept me going without quiting is my family. Picturing myself (autosuggesting) and seing myself almost there it’s what really keeps me focused, and plus Im just stuborn.lol I’m not a quitter, and I always ask myself if I quit I would never know how successful I could’ve been. Keep your head in the game and keep on fighting. We all have those down moments :)

Thanks for the frank and thoughtful piece. Yes I’ve had to – on a few occasions – tell myself that no road is going to be smooth or easy to navigate. It can all appear overwhelming at times but the successful people be able to look back with a smile. Like you say, criticism is research and failures are just experience.

    Hey Hector,

    This is a great post!

Oh the power of making a decision! In our minds we are right. It’s not easy for someone to convince us, as humans, that we’re wrong. So making that decision that you CAN and WILL do this with SUCCESS, is one of the most powerful things you can do.

Once you really do that, no one is going to convince you otherwise. It has to be a solid decision.

I love the part about looking at negative comments as “market research”. lol Too true. I can’t say I enjoy them, but when I get them I do take a serious look at where they are coming from and how I can improve.

Thanks for telling it like it is!

It takes alot of guts to share your ups and downs of marketing but truthfully I think everyone goes through that. I certainly have. Got in, got involved with a company, had NO idea what I was doing, tried another company, failed at that as well, got frustrated, and finally found Katie Freiling and started blogging.

It’s a journey, and when you decide that failure is not an option things get that much more interesting. :)
