“Live” Case Study: This Changed My Mind About PopUps Forever…

popup domination review case studyTo pop up or Not to pop up? That’s been the question in my mind for a very long time until 2 weeks ago.

Today I’m gonna reveal to you why and what changed my mind about pop ups forever in a “live” case study I did on my own blog.

The reason it’s “live” is because as you read this, this amazing plugin is working for me getting me more opt-ins, and all it took was 15 seconds to install and about 7 minutes to set up.

It’s called PopUp Domination.

This is a wordpress plugin that creates a beautifully designed popup light-box on your blog, enticing your visitors to sign up for your newsletter or a free gift.

It works with any autoresponder service ( I recommend Aweber cuz they’re so cool) and one of my favorite features is that it allows you to set how often it pops up.

The last thing I want to do is annoy the hell outta you guys so this feature HAD to included in order for me to buy it.

Well, enough with the features and stuff, let’s get into what you really wanna hear. What can it do for YOU?

Here’s What It Did For Me..

For this case study I wanted to have REAL & RECENT results to show you, so I created a brand new list, using a brand new special report.

The reason for this was to eliminate any doubts that you might have in your mind about growing your list of subscribers.

I want you guys to know that you can actually do this right NOW – starting from scratch.. So here’s what happened.

First – I created the Launch Your Blog special report. Read this post if you want a step-by-step guide to creating a content packed Lead Magnet.

Then – I created a new list in Aweber on August 5th and didn’t do any type of promotion for the report. I just added it to my free stuff page link on the top navigation.

Then – On Tuesday August 10th, I bought PopUp Domination and set it all up within 10 minutes of buying it. Here’s the receipt I got from Clickbank:

http://www.hectorjcuevas.com/launch-blogLastly – I started writing my regular blog post, just like I always do and BAM!! – as the traffic came, so did the optins.. here’s a screen shot I took of the last 2 weeks using this plugin..

Keep in mind that I do get a decent amount of traffic and results may vary depending on the amount of traffic you generate – but the results speak for themselves..

If you were debating whether or not to add a popup to your site – then hopefully this helped you make up your mind.

Do I recommend it? YES!! – So..

You’ll be glad you did.

I know there might still be some people who still DISLIKE popups.. so here’s a quick question: How do you feel about Popups? Leave your answer in the comments below..

    Hi Hector!

Well I do have to say that pop-ups annoy the hell out of me and I always run away when I encounter them, UNLESS I already know the person who’s blog I am visiting, or REALLY want to read the content (and then normally I click ‘close’ on that annoying pop-up). What is terribly annoying is when it keeps coming back! I’m glad to know you have the option with this one to set it to pop up only once….

But, I have to say, coming from YOU, since your content is always so nicely presented and intriguing (you’re a great copywriter did you know!? :) I did find myself giving it a second look, and because it really does LOOK nice (possibly because of your nice graphics for your offer :)

So, seeing your results it does make me think twice about implementing something like this, naturally, I would take YOU up on it when I get time (as you may already know, I am behind on things I want to follow up on already!) because I already know-like-and-trust YOU!

Thanks again for always presenting great content and offers!

    Wishing You Continued Success,

      Vicki,

Wow, You really think I’m a good Copywriter? …thanks – OK.. don’t get me wrong, I still think those stupid pop ups are annoying as hell, but its important to detach yourself emotionally when marketing..

So, I don’t market with emotion, I simply do what works..

Peter made a good point – RESPONSIVENESS is what counts when building a list of subscribers and I agree… but responsiveness is built only AFTER someone opt-ins for something they want.. you proved it with your comment Vicki – the reason you’re considering it, even though you hate it is because I’ve proved to be a trustworthy person.. ..right?

Thanks for your very in-depth comment by the way

      • Vicki Berry says:

Absolutely Hector! You were right on point with your response to Peter and what you said before, which is what I was trying to convey, that it IS about value and what YOU provide. The fact that you’ve proven to provide value and have built trust with ME is the ONLY reason I would consider opting into your pop up (as much as I do dislike them!) And you’re right, we should do what works, which is what you are proving by your study here.

Oh, and you are right on the other count, that yes I DO think you’re a good copywriter!

Thanks again, great post and value as usual! :)

    • Robert {Bryan} Anthony says:

      @Vicki –>”…because I already know-like-and-trust YOU!”
That’s KEY! You got it. Not to sound too redundant, but, it’s not about product…it’s people.

Value, like I see here with Hector and those of you who comment, are providing insights that most “seekers” may never realize on their own. So, they’re searching and searching.

That’s why I believe it’s imperative to comment on blogs, forums, etc. You don’t usually realize that you’re helping someone find solutions to their need AND they begin a conversation with you.

      Blessings to All!

      R_Bryan_Anthony

  3. Hector, I reserve judgment :)

The measure of success is not how many you have optin but how responsive the list is.

Of course you would have to do a split test between those who sign up without the popup installed and those who signup through the popup.

Then you would compare the two lists to see if there are any differences in response rates.

Of course you could short cut it and just install the popup and see if the response rate changes for your list as it gets bigger.

    I hate popups :)

      Hey Peter,

I can see you don’t like popups.. lol – here’s the thing, I strongly believe in having a responsive list of subscribers, and I agree that that’s what matters.. but I also believe that you can have the same exact list as someone else and that one person can get people to respond more than the other.

It’s all about how much VALUE you add after they join your list – without the value and the relationship that value builds, the size of the list doesn’t matter..

Popups have proven to convert – my job is to provide value after the fact..

thanks for your honest response by the way

      • Hey Hector

Let us know as your list grows if the response rate goes up, down or remains the same.

@Hector –>”It’s all about how much VALUE you add after they join your list – without the value and the relationship that value builds, the size of the list doesn’t matter..”

This is WHY I don’t mind spending precious time reading comments like these and replying to them.

Value is CRUCIAL to getting a list and “keeping” the list viable and healthy. A list without value is just a list with names.

If you want to reel in the “big” fish (recurring/satisfied customers or subscribers), use the right kind of bait. Otherwise, you just gather small fish…stinking up your day!

Like so many that may not like Popups, I generally don’t because I’m legally blind and it interferes with my need to navigate around a website (my 24″ screen is a 1/4 of common screen views).

Now, my “view” has changed since I’ve educated myself about Popups and the psychology behind them and the psychology of the human need, wants, and value.

If a “seeker” goes to a site, looking for answers to their pain, and a Popup appears that’s relevant to their need, then they most likely will not mind the Popup.

My thoughts may not resonate to some. But, I understand and realize the significance of Popups in the marketing arena.

    Hi Hector,

I’ve went back and forth on this topic. Actually one time I decided to get it but the one I purchased didn’t work right so I didn’t keep it long.

I used to hate pop ups, now I only dislike them. ;) Maybe I’m getting used to them. However I do, and probably always will, HATE with a passion the ones that keep coming back.

There is one blog I don’t enjoy being on simply because that dumb pop-up keeps coming back. I just want to skim through the content as fast as I can and get out of there before it comes back! It reminds me of Australian flies.

I’m going to check out your recommendation and seriously reconsider getting one again.

    Thanks Hector.

    Susanna

    • Hector Cuevas says:

      Hey Susanna,

From hate to dislike is not too bad ..lol

Yea, those that keep popping up are annoying, I’m glad this one doesn’t..

  8. Nat says:

    Hey Hector

I have been dying to know what Yaro was using, and now I have found it! I have a pop up, I have to say I use to really dislike pop ups simply because I would always attribute them to SPAM! But that was more the “glittery, flashing, neon sign” type ones…. you know the ones I mean… YOU ARE THE MILLIONTH VISITOR or HERE’S YOUR FREE iPAD!!

So anyway I have a pop up now on my website that I had to create myself, and have found that I have had more optins also. Mine is not that intrusive though, it will show once then nothing after that. I know someone who has their pop up showing every time you move on their site… drives me up the wall so I refuse to go back to their site. Anyways just my thoughts….

Thanks for sharing the plugin, ill be purchasing it from you!!

    cheers

Thanks for sharing Hector- sometimes its good to go against the grain – most people say they hate pop ups BUT if there is some trust and a relationship already in the mix and it is effective – then for sure go for it

Most people hate tv ads – telemarketing etc but yet we respond to the medium that’s why marketers use it

Will check out POP UP DOMINATION – not sure if us old fashioned BLOGSPOT types can avail though!

  11. Hi Hector,

interesting post, interesting discussion. Thanks for sharing.

Well, I hate them too and I consider them as being spammy, that’s why I a close them right away – but you make a good point when replying to Vicki that we need to detach emotionally, at least in order to think clearly about it. I believe that universe will find a way to bring people together that are meant to interact, with or without pop-ups.

Of course, congratulations for your instant successes and keep us informed.
