So last week I released my very first insider report on my blog showing a simple, but effective strategy on how to get more leads from your blog.
…looking at the comments, many people liked it, which is always good.
I tracked everything from pageviews to downloads just so I could show you how well it turned out (..or how much it sucked) – thankfully, it was the former :0)
Here are the results of that quick report release:
- Downloads: 139 in 5 days – This was tracked using the Bit.ly link tracking service.

- Post Views: 547 views since published – This was tracked using the Google Analytic plugin on my blog (Google Analyticator) and the WordPress Stats plugin for the cool looking graph.

WEIRD RIGHT?
Now, in my mind… this just doesn’t make any sense. I mean, how can I get 547 post views but only 139 downloads?
One of 2 things might have happened:
- 1. The Bi.ly tracking was messed up.. OR
- 2. Those who came to view the page already had the report and just wanted to see where it came from.
Here’s why I think #2 was the case, and how you can benefit from using this strategy yourself.
As you probably know, the report was a direct download, meaning that there was no opt-in required or any of that nonsense. I just wanted to get the info in people’s hands.
INSIDE THE INSIDER REPORT.. it gave the user the ability to distribute the report to anyone they like, which I believe created the gigantic boost in traffic as you can clearly see in the graph.
The fact that more and more people were getting their hands on this report, I believe that led more people back to the original post to see where it came from.
So I’d like to thank everyone who shared this report with their list, social media followers, tribe members and friends.
Thank You.. Talk Soon

Hey Hector!
Congrats on breaking the 100k mark! Totally awesome! You couldn’t have done it without delivering consistent, quality content either.
Interesting results… It was a great report so I can see why it was probably passed around. It’s fun to see those jumps in traffic.
Way to go!

Hi Hector,
Congrats on going over 100K on Alexa Hector! As I always say value offered = value/accolades received. You provide awesome stuff here.
I agree with #2. When you offer something freely people tend to share it freely…..opt-in forms are important but sometimes seeing the Bigger Picture of reaching a larger number of people is the way to go.
Enjoy the day!

Hector, Congrats on the ratings! I am a recent follower of your blog and its easy to see how good content delivers valuable results.
This report provides some cool insight. Understanding how/why your customers (or followers) act and react in these situations is important to track; especially if you want to sell them on something!
Good detective work!

Hey Hector! I am completely flattered you did a video for Elisabeth and me at youtube! Thank you so much. If I understood your guest blog at Laura Roeder´s blog I was already feeding my social media (wordpress, blogger, fb and linked in) through ping.fm. So the larger feed from superfeedr was not necessary any more. Thanks for clarifying this and thank you for you generous gift of teaching me so valuable things. Sounds like congratulations are in order, Hector.
One question though (maybe I misunderstood something): isn’t is possible that you have more page view but less downloads because people looked at the page and did not convert to downloading the report?

Ana,
That’s definitely a possibility, but it was a direct download and only 25% of viewers got it? That’s less than my lead conversion on my squeeze pages – so, if I get higher conversions for something people need to opt-in for, how could this not convert at over 50%?
Not saying it’s not possible – but that’s why I don’t think this was the case.
Thanks for sharing

Those are some interesting pieces of data their Hector, and your distribution method with the no opt in turned out to be a quite an effective experiment.
I was particularly interested in the number of people who actually traced back the source of the download – to your site that is.
It seems like you have employed a great way to using viral marketing
