5 Ways To Improve Conversion Rates On Your Blog

blog-conversion-ratesIf you’ve been online for any length of time, you know that the path to long-term success is in building a targeted responsive list of prospects.

You can build this list several different ways but for the sake of your time and mine, I’m gonna give you 5 ways to improve your visitor to lead conversion rate on your blog.

The best way to do this is simply to direct attention to the opt-in forms on your blog. There’s so much going happening on a blog, that it becomes very difficult to get someone to take the time and enter their email address in form. But hopefully these tips will help…

Here Are The 5 Ways To Improve Conversion Rates On Your Blog

#1. Use Your Intro Video – I use my intro video not only to welcome my visitors but also to direct my visitors attention to the form below the video. This is your BEST chance to capture a lead if it’s the first time on your site.

#2. Use Visuals Aides - They told us in school that visual aides helped direct attention away from us and onto something else (to avoid stage fright) but the same principle works here. If you have amateur Photoshop skills & the scripts to create a nice-looking VISUAL of the lead magnet, that will help you get more opt-ins.

(..next week I’ll be holding the contest for the Free cover graphics.. be sure to stay tuned)

#3. Top Right-Hand Side – When a visitor first visit your site they scan the page just like they read a book (left-to-right) so their eyes go straight to the right-hand side of the page. This is the PERFECT spot to put your Lead Magnet offer and opt-in form.

Also, try your best to have it ‘above the fold’ – so that your visitor doesn’t have to scroll down to enter their name and email. If you can’t have it ‘above the fold’, don’t worry about it.

#4. This one has done great for me –> Create a “Free Stuff” Page - People love free stuff and so if they see you’re offering something for free, they WILL click on it. The trick is to  create a lead capture page on your server (not on WordPress) to capture those leads. To see exactly what I mean, click on the “Free Stuff” link at the top of this page. USE IT.. IT WORKS!

#5. Insert Opt-In Form In Related Posts – If you’re market is in the home business or online marketing niche, then putting an opt-in form on every post is a bit risky in my opinion. But, I would definitely recommend adding an opt-in form once in a while, especially on posts where you mention your lead magnet.

FAQ: What Conversion Rates Can I Expect After Doing All This?

Because of the vast amount of information, links and options on your blog, fighting for your visitors attention – you can expect anywhere between 1 and 2% conversion rate. Anything lower than 1%, you might need to start thinking about changing your call to action, webform position or offer.

For the “Free-Stuff” lead capture page, you need to shoot for 20% or higher. Again, anything lower than 20%, you need start playing around with some of the things mentioned above. I won’t say what my conversion rates are for the simple fact that I don’t want anyone starting out to start comparing their results to mine.

    Hey Hector!

I love the use of lists and this one is great! I also notice that helps me and just in general is that your blog isnt to clutter, people like seeing a fresh blog with no to much going on. No tons of distractions when a visitor is reading a post or what have you!

      Hey Kyle,

Yea, you’re right… clutter distracts your prospects from your main goal – whether that’s joining your list, reading your post, or leaving a comment.

Keeping it nice and clean is the way to go..
      appreciate your comments bro.

  4. Great post Hector! It never occured to me that people first look at the right hand side of the page. Hmmmm food for thought. Thanks for the great advice.
    Donna Merrill

    • Hector Cuevas says:

      Hey Donna,

Well I should reword it a little bit – they “end up” at the right side of the page because in essence we scan a web-page just like we read a book. Left to right. So they “end-up” at the right side. & this is the perfect place to set up your intro video and opt-in form – just like you have it on your blog.

      thanks for sharing your thoughts..
      Have a great day.
      Hector

    Hector,

Tons of great suggestions here. I am going to have to get busy adding some things to my blog! I was surprised at the difference in conversion rates from the newsletter subscription compared to giving away something for free. That is an incredible difference and will become a priority on my list!

      Hey Mary,

Yes, I’m sure the difference was very noticeable – Newsletters are nice, but something more “tangible”, something that your prospects can see and put some type of value on will almost always out perform.

Your welcome – glad to help

      Have a great day,

That sounds great man, I’m almost 100% sure – (let’s just say 99.97%, because I could be wrong) that adding a “tangible” gift to your free offer will increase conversions. Newsletters are good, and as you said, they still work.. but they’re soooo 2005.. :D

I’m sure you’ll see a bump – thanks for the compliment, I’m working on getting my graphics design skills up.

  23. Bridget says:

Thanks for this great article giving such clear and concise useful information. It does raise a question for me, how do I ensure that the leads get captured on the server and not wordpress?

I am incredibly new to this blogging world and realise I need to change from .com to .org, what advice would you give someone as new as me?

    Many thanks

    Bridget

    • Hector Cuevas says:

      Bridget,

I saw you signed up for my blogging blueprint so, that’s a great start (although it’s a bit intermediate)

But, either way – definitely switch to .org ASAP. As far as capturing leads, you will need to add your autoresponder
code to the sidebar. That will create an opt-in box so you can start building your list of targeted prospects.

      hope that helps,
any other questions, feel free to send me a message using the contact me form
